Frequently Asked Questions
How is vehicle tax calculated in Nepal?
Vehicle tax is a provincial tax set by each province’s annual Finance Act. It depends on your vehicle type, fuel type, engine capacity (CC) for petrol/diesel vehicles, and motor power (watts for EV two-wheelers, kW for EV cars). This calculator uses verified Bagmati Province FY 2083/84 rates and computes multi-year arrears one fiscal year at a time.

Does vehicle tax differ by province?
Yes. Vehicle tax is set by each of the seven provinces’ annual Finance Acts. Only Bagmati Province FY 2083/84 rates are verified in this calculator; other provinces currently show Bagmati tables as an estimate and are flagged in the interface. Always confirm with your local Transport Management Office.
How do I calculate several years of unpaid vehicle tax?
Choose the fiscal year you last paid, and the calculator itemizes every outstanding fiscal year separately — each year’s tax plus its own late fine. It never simply multiplies the current rate by the number of years.
What happens if I don’t renew my vehicle registration?
Late fines accrue under the Bagmati Vehicle & Transport Management Act 2075 §176: 5% within the first 30 days after the deadline, 10% for days 31–75, 20% after that within the same fiscal year, and 32% for each fully elapsed overdue fiscal year (up to 5 years).
How is late payment calculated?
The fine applies to the tax amount only. Current fiscal year: 5% (first 30 days), 10% (days 31–75), 20% (76+ days). Each prior overdue fiscal year: 32% per year, for up to 5 years. Insurance and renewal fees are separate and are never fined.
Is third-party insurance required for renewal?
Yes, third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicle renewal in Nepal. This calculator provides an approximate premium estimate — it is a separate charge and is never fined. Actual rates vary by insurer.
Does EV tax use CC?
No. Electric two-wheelers are taxed by motor power in watts (W) and electric cars/jeeps by motor power in kilowatts (kW). In Bagmati, e-scooters start at Rs 1,000 and EV cars at Rs 5,000 (up to 50 kW) for FY 2083/84.
What information do I need to calculate my vehicle tax?
Your province, vehicle type, fuel type, engine cc (or motor power), the fiscal year your vehicle was last renewed, and how late the current year’s renewal is. The calculator handles everything else.
